Climbing Harihar: What to Carry and How to Reach

24 Aug 2026 · GoRaahi Adventures

Harihar is a short trek with one very high-stakes section. What you carry — and especially what you wear on your feet — matters more here than on longer, gentler trails. The practical side, stripped to what actually makes a difference.

Getting to the base

The standard base village is Nirgudpada, about 40 km from Nashik, 165 km from Mumbai and roughly 220 km from Pune. The road is decent until the last stretch. From Mumbai, most trekkers drive overnight or leave early morning. From Nashik, it's under an hour.

What to carry

Shoes with serious grip — this is the single most important item on a Harihar trek. The rock-cut steps are smooth from centuries of use, and in any season they demand traction. Carry at least two litres of water. Light snacks. A headlamp if you're starting in the dark. And leave anything bulky or loose behind — you need your hands free on the staircase.

On the staircase

Use the hand-carved niches for grip. Three points of contact at all times. Don't rush. Don't look down if heights bother you — look at the next step. The climb takes minutes; there's no reason to hurry. If the steps are wet from rain, double your caution and consider whether today is the right day.

The one thing every first-timer should know

The descent is harder than the ascent. Going up, you look at the rock in front of you. Going down, you see the drop below. Many trekkers find the climb thrilling and the return frightening. Take it slowly, face the rock, and use the holds. It's the same staircase you just came up; it hasn't changed.

Pack light, grip well, and Harihar is pure adrenaline. Trek it with GoRaahi and our leaders walk you through every step — literally.
