Bir Billing sits in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, and getting there is more straightforward than most first-timers expect. It is not remote in the way that Spiti or upper Ladakh are remote — it just sits off the main tourist highway, which is part of why it still feels calm when you arrive. Here are the routes that work, from each direction.
Roughly 520 km by road, about ten to twelve hours by bus or car. Overnight Volvo buses run from Delhi to Bir via Chandigarh and Mandi — board at night, arrive by morning, fly by afternoon. Alternatively, fly to Gaggal Airport in Kangra, the nearest airport, about 70 km from Bir, and taxi from there. The airport has limited flights and not all airlines serve it daily, so check schedules before building your plan around it. The bus is the more reliable option for most travellers.
About 65 to 70 km, two to three hours by road via Palampur. Taxis and shared cabs run from McLeod Ganj bus stand. Many travellers combine a few days in McLeod Ganj with a day trip or overnight to Bir for the paragliding — the distance is short enough that the two places work as a natural pair, one for the Tibetan Buddhist experience on foot and one for the same tradition from the air.
Approximately 200 km via Mandi, four to five hours by road. A longer drive but feasible as a dedicated leg in a Himachal trip. The road is scenic through the Beas valley, and the shift from Manali’s mountain energy to Bir’s valley calm is a change of pace that most travellers welcome by that point in the trip.
About 270 km, five to six hours by road. Chandigarh is the natural transit hub for anyone arriving by train or flight from the south or east, with good rail and air connections to Delhi, Mumbai and Pune. From Chandigarh the road runs through the lower Himachal foothills and climbs gently into the Kangra valley.
Bir village is small and walkable — the monasteries, the cafés and the landing zone are all within strolling distance. The drive from Bir to the Billing takeoff site (14 km uphill) is covered by your paragliding operator in a jeep as part of the flight booking. Local taxis and auto-rickshaws are available for trips to the nearby Baijnath temple or Palampur.
