Harihar's staircase is the same staircase in every season. The conditions around it are not. Choosing when to climb matters more here than on almost any other Sahyadri trek, because the rock-cut steps change character dramatically with the weather.
The staircase disappears into cloud, the valley greens over, and the views — when they appear — are spectacular. It's also the most dangerous window: the rock steps get genuinely slippery, the hand-holds fill with water, and the exposure that's thrilling in dry conditions becomes frightening in the wet. Fatal accidents have occurred on the Harihar steps in monsoon. If you go, go with experienced people, in good shoes, and with honest self-assessment about your comfort on wet, exposed rock.
This is the sweet spot: the green of the monsoon lingers, the steps are dry again, the air is clear, and the views from the top are at their best. For a first attempt, this is the honest recommendation.
Cool, dry, clear — comfortable climbing weather and the best visibility. The sunrise from the top in winter is cold and stunning. The trail is at its safest.
Hot and exposed, especially on the treeless upper sections and the staircase itself. Doable, but start early and carry more water than you think.
