Kothaligad by Night: Climbing to Sunrise on the Pinnacle

20 Sep 2026 · GoRaahi Adventures

Kothaligad’s pinnacle at dawn — the first light breaking over the Sahyadris from a summit you climbed in the dark — is one of the best sunrise experiences within reach of Mumbai. The night trek adds a layer of atmosphere the daytime version does not have: headlamp pools on the forest trail, the sound of the mountain at midnight without the visual, the rock-cut staircase by torchlight with the stone walls close on both sides, and then at the top a slow orange sunrise that makes the cold and the dark and the two-hour climb worth everything.

How the night trek works

Most groups depart Mumbai or Karjat in the late evening, reaching Ambivli village around midnight. The trek to the pinnacle takes two to three hours in the dark — headlamps lighting the forest trail and the final rock climb. You reach the summit before dawn, settle onto the small platform, wrap yourself in whatever warm layer you brought, and wait. The sky goes from black to grey to orange, and the Sahyadris materialise out of the dark: first as silhouettes, then as ridgelines, then as the full green-and-rock landscape you have been standing above without seeing.

The pinnacle staircase in the dark

Climbing the rock-cut staircase inside the pinnacle by headlamp is Kothaligad’s most memorable moment. Each step is high, the passage is narrow, the stone walls catch the light and throw shadows that make the space feel older than anything you have walked through before. It is not dangerous with care, but it demands full attention — save the conversation for the summit, and give the staircase the focus it is asking for.

What to carry for the night version

A good headlamp with fresh batteries — phone torches die at the wrong moment, and the staircase is not the place to discover that. Warm layers: nights on the fort are cold, even in the pre-monsoon months, and the wind on the pinnacle at 4 a.m. goes through anything thin. Sturdy shoes with grip for the dark trail and the steep steps. A mat or ground sheet for sitting on the summit while you wait. Packed food and at least a litre of water. And company — this is not a trek to do alone at night.

The dark, the climb, the sunrise. Kothaligad by night is the trek that stays with you. Do it with GoRaahi — guided, the timing handled, and the pinnacle waiting at first light.
