McLeodganj and Bir in November: Cold Mornings, Clear Skies, Golden Light

19 Oct 2026 · GoRaahi Adventures

November in the Kangra valley has a particular light. The monsoon haze is long gone. The air is so clear that the Dhauladhars look close enough to touch. Mornings are sharp and cold, afternoons are golden and warm on your back, and by evening you are reaching for a second layer and a cup of something hot.

If you ask people who live here, many will quietly tell you this is their favourite month.

What the weather is like

In McLeodganj, November days are usually sunny and pleasant, while nights get properly cold and can drop close to freezing towards the end of the month. Bir, which sits lower, is a little milder in the day but similarly chilly at night. Rain is uncommon. The first snow on the higher peaks often appears around this time, making the ridgelines look freshly painted.

Weather in the mountains always has the final word, so check a forecast close to your dates, but November is one of the most reliable months in this part of Himachal.

Why it is a good month in Bir

Autumn is one of the main flying seasons at Billing. Stable conditions, clear visibility and soft thermals make it a favourite time for tandem flights. From the air, you can see the tea gardens of the valley, Bir's monasteries, and on a clear day a long sweep of plains to the south. Our existing guide on Bir Billing costs and seasons goes into the detail.

Why it is a good month in McLeodganj

The crowds of summer and the festive rush have eased. Trails are dry. Cafés have their windows open to the sun. Waterfalls like Bhagsu are quieter after the monsoon, and campsites have the clearest night skies of the year.

What to pack for November

  • A proper insulated jacket for nights, plus a fleece for mornings.
  • Thermal innerwear, a woollen cap and gloves.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses. The high-altitude sun is stronger than it feels.
  • Comfortable walking shoes with good grip.
  • Lip balm and moisturiser; the air is dry.
  • A small reusable bottle, because you will still need water even when it is cold.

The light, again

If you take only one piece of advice from this post: be outside at 4 pm. Whatever you are doing, whichever ridge or rooftop you are on, the late November afternoon in the Kangra valley is something you will remember long after the trip.
