The guide shouts “Forward!” and eight paddles hit the water at once. The raft tilts into the rapid. A wall of green-white water rises in front of you and pours straight over your head, so cold it knocks every thought out of your mind. Then you're through, everyone is screaming and laughing, and the guide is grinning like he planned it. He did.
Rafting on the Ganga in winter is cold, bright and unforgettable.
Yes. Rafting in Rishikesh typically runs from around September or October to June, pausing during the monsoon, when the river is too high and fast. Winter is a lovely time: skies are clear, the water is a striking emerald, and the stretches are calmer than in summer, though still lively. The trade-off is cold water. You will not forget it.
Rafting stretches are named after where they start, and all end near Rishikesh.
Rapids here are generally graded from easy to moderately challenging. Choose based on your comfort, not your ego.
Yes. With a life jacket and a trained guide, many first-time rafters can't swim. The guide will teach you what to do if you fall out. Mostly, it's: stay calm, float on your back with feet pointing downstream, and wait for the rope.
Warm up with hot chai on the bank. Feel your hands slowly come back to life. Look back at the stretch you just came down, and realise you'll want to do it again.
