Sandhan Valley: Monsoon vs Winter — Two Different Treks

24 Aug 2026 · GoRaahi Adventures

Sandhan Valley doesn't just change with the seasons — it becomes a different trek entirely. The canyon's character, the water, the difficulty, and the risk all shift dramatically between monsoon and winter. Choosing the right season is choosing the right experience.

Monsoon (June--September): beautiful and dangerous

In the rains, the canyon fills. Waterfalls cascade down the walls, the rock gleams dark and wet, and the water pools deepen substantially. It is the most visually dramatic version of Sandhan — and also the most dangerous. The water levels can rise rapidly and unpredictably, flash floods are a genuine risk, and the rappelling points become treacherous. Most responsible operators pause treks during peak monsoon for this reason.

Post-monsoon and winter (October--February): the recommended window

The water recedes to wading depth, the canyon retains its green from the rains, the weather is clear and cool, and the rappelling sections are dry enough to descend safely. This is when the full canyon experience — rappels, pool crossings, boulder scrambles, and camping under a star-filled sky — is at its best and safest. The canyon floor is navigable, the air is crisp, and the Sahyadri peaks stand clear above the gorge.

Summer (March--May)

The water drops to its lowest, the canyon is at its warmest, and the trek is physically easier — but the magic of the shadows and the water is diminished. If you're purely there for the rappelling and the rock, summer works; if you want the full atmospheric experience, come earlier.

Same canyon, different treks. On GoRaahi's Sandhan departures we pick the season that matches what you want from the valley.
