Hill-station weather has one rule: it changes its mind. A warm, sunny Mall Road morning can turn to cold cloud by afternoon, and the evening will be cooler than either. Pack for a single fixed "hill weather" and you'll be wrong twice a day. Pack in layers and you're ready for all of it.
A base of comfortable everyday clothing, a warm mid-layer (fleece or light sweater), and a jacket — windproof, ideally water-resistant. Even in summer the evenings want a warm layer; in the shoulder and winter months, add thermals and a heavier jacket. The whole system should pack down small so you can carry it while you're out and add it when the temperature drops.
Hill towns are made of slopes and steps, and half the good stuff is a walk from the road. Comfortable, grippy walking shoes worn in — not new, not flat-soled fashion shoes. If you're heading toward snow or higher trails, waterproof footwear.
Mountains make their own weather, and a sudden shower is common well outside the monsoon. A compact rain jacket or poncho weighs almost nothing and saves a day. In the monsoon it's essential, along with a cover for your bag.
Sunscreen and sunglasses (the sun is stronger at altitude than it feels), lip balm, a power bank, basic meds, a reusable water bottle, and a small daypack for outings. Warm accessories — cap, gloves — if you're going in the colder months.
Layer up and the hills can do what they like. Travel the hill country with GoRaahi and you'll get a tuned list for the exact season and stops on your trip.
