Trekking Kothaligad: What to Carry and How to Reach from Mumbai by Train

20 Sep 2026 · GoRaahi Adventures

Kothaligad is one of the most accessible Sahyadri forts from Mumbai. You can reach the trailhead by suburban train and shared Vikram, climb one of the most distinctive pinnacles in the range, and be home by evening. Here is the practical side.

Getting to Ambivli from Mumbai

Take the suburban train toward Karjat and alight at Neral. From Neral, a shared six-seater Vikram runs to Kashele and onward to Ambivli village for about fifty-five rupees per seat. From Ambivli, the trek to Peth village is roughly 4 km on a broad track. The whole journey from Mumbai takes about three hours including the train and the Vikram. From Pune: roughly 130 km by road, about three hours by car.

What to carry

Sturdy shoes with grip for the pinnacle staircase and the rock sections. One to two litres of water. Packed snacks. A headlamp if doing the night or sunrise version. Sun protection for the exposed summit. In monsoon: rain gear, leech socks tucked into trousers, and a dry bag. Keep the pack small and close to your back — the pinnacle passage is narrow, and a big bag jams in the stone.

At the base

Peth village has a few small eateries — simple rice plates are the standard offering. Camping options have grown in recent years, with tent stays and food packages available through village operators. There is no ATM; carry cash. Network coverage is patchy.

Combining with nearby destinations

Kothaligad pairs naturally with Matheran (Peb Fort is on the same ridge system) for a two-day weekend. A Kothaligad sunrise trek on Saturday morning, followed by an afternoon at Matheran, makes a strong combination without heavy driving.

Train from Mumbai, Vikram to the village, trek to the pinnacle, train home. Kothaligad is the easiest fort trek you can do from the city. Do it with GoRaahi.
