The Road from Bir to McLeodganj: Baijnath, Tea Gardens and an Artists' Village

19 Oct 2026 · GoRaahi Adventures

On a map, the drive from Bir to McLeodganj is just a short hop across the Kangra valley, a few hours on winding roads. Most people treat it as a transfer: sleep in the car, wake up in Little Lhasa.

That is a mistake. This road passes some of the loveliest, least-hurried corners of Himachal.

Baijnath: a temple older than most stories

A short drive from Bir, Baijnath temple has stood beside the Binwa river since the early 13th century. Dedicated to Shiva as Vaidyanath, the lord of physicians, it is built of finely carved stone in the Nagara style, and inscriptions inside record that it was built by two local merchants.

Go in the morning, when the bells are ringing and the light falls on the carvings. Walk around the outer walls slowly. The detail is extraordinary, and the Dhauladhars rise behind the temple spire as if they were part of the design.

Palampur: walk the tea gardens

Palampur is the tea town of the Kangra valley. Kangra tea has a long history, once prized enough to travel to London and beyond. The gardens around Palampur are neat, glossy green rows on gentle slopes, with the snowline floating behind them.

Stop, walk a little way into the rows, and buy a packet from a local estate shop. Kangra green tea is light and floral, and drinking it at home later will put you straight back on that slope.

Andretta: where artists came to stay

Just off the road is Andretta, a small village with an outsized creative history. In the years before Independence, the Irish theatre artist Norah Richards settled here, and over the decades that followed painters, potters and writers followed. The painter Sobha Singh also made Andretta his home, and his gallery still stands.

Today the village is best known for its pottery studio, where you can watch potters at the wheel and sometimes try it yourself. It is quiet, unhurried and very green. Take your time.

Into McLeodganj

From here, the road continues past Kangra and climbs through Dharamshala to McLeodganj. If you time it right, you arrive as the prayer wheels catch the evening light. A good day, and not a single minute of it wasted on just getting somewhere.

Tips for the drive

  • Start early. Hill roads are slower than maps suggest.
  • Carry cash for small temple offerings, tea and pottery.
  • Dress modestly for Baijnath.
  • Keep motion-sickness tablets handy if you need them.
