Kalsubai Peak: What Climbing Maharashtra's Everest Is Really Like

At 1,646 metres — 5,400 feet — Kalsubai is the highest point in Maharashtra, and climbing it has become something of a rite of passage for Sahyadri trekkers. It is not the hardest trek in the range. But it may be the most satisfying one for a first-timer: a genuine summit, iron ladders bolted into rock, and a sunrise from the top that makes every steep stretch worth it.

What the trek actually involves

The standard route starts from Bari village in the Ahmednagar district and climbs roughly 800 metres over about 4 km of trail. The lower stretches pass through paddy fields and forest; the upper reaches turn rocky and steep, with iron ladders and chains fixed at the trickiest sections to help you up. It's a moderate trek that asks for stamina more than technical skill — the ladders look dramatic in photographs, but they're sturdy and well-placed. Most trekkers take three to four hours up and two to three hours down.

The summit

At the top sits a small temple dedicated to Goddess Kalsubai, the local deity who gives the peak its name. The real reward is the view: on a clear day you can see the Bhandardara reservoir below and the forts of the Sahyadris in every direction — Ratangad, Harishchandragad, the Alang-Madan-Kulang cluster. For sunrise trekkers who start in the dark, the first light breaking over this panorama is the moment the climb pays off.

Who it suits

Kalsubai is doable for a reasonably fit first-timer, but it's not a casual walk — the steepness is real and the ladders require a head for heights. Anyone who exercises regularly and can handle a few hours of sustained uphill will be fine. Children and older trekkers do complete it, but at their own pace and with realistic expectations about the climb.

When to go

The monsoon (July--September) turns the trail green and dramatic but slippery; post-monsoon (October--February) gives clearer skies and cooler weather, the best window for sunrise treks. Summer is hot and exposed. Pick your season by whether you want the drama or the view.
