You take off your shoes, roll up your trousers, and step into the stream. The water is cold enough to make you gasp. Ahead, the rock walls rise on both sides, closing in until the sky is just a thin strip of light above you. Somewhere further up the gorge, a hidden waterfall echoes.
Robber's Cave isn't really a cave at all. It's something more fun.
Locally known as Guchhupani, Robber's Cave is a narrow river gorge a short drive from central Dehradun. A stream flows through it, and you walk through the water itself, ankle- to knee-deep in places, between towering rock walls. Legend says robbers once hid here, using the gorge to disappear. The name stuck.
The walk is short and easy, but the gorge has a sense of mystery. Further in, the walls get narrower and the light more dramatic.
Sahastradhara, meaning thousand-fold spring, lies on the other side of Dehradun. Here, water drips constantly from limestone overhangs and small caves, forming curtains of droplets. Sulphur springs feed pools that many people believe have healing properties. It's a gentle, slightly surreal place, and best appreciated when quiet.
If you have time, add Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple, a cave shrine to Shiva on the banks of a seasonal river, where water drips steadily onto the shivling from the rock above. It's peaceful, cool and deeply local.
Start early at Robber's Cave, have a hearty breakfast in town, visit Tapkeshwar, and end at Sahastradhara or head up the hill to Mussoorie for the sunset. Dehradun is often treated as a transit town on the way to the hills. Give it a day, and it surprises you.
