Everyone who treks near Lonavala knows Lohagad. Far fewer climb Visapur, the larger, higher and wilder twin fort standing right beside it — connected by the same ridge, accessible from the same base, and in monsoon, home to a waterfall staircase that is the most photographed trail in the Sahyadris. Visapur is what happens when the crowds take the well-known path and the mountain next door keeps its secrets for the people who look sideways.
Visapur stands at roughly 3,567 feet, slightly higher than Lohagad. The most popular route starts from near Bhaje village (accessed from Malavli station on the Mumbai–Pune train line or from Lonavala) and climbs through forest before hitting the famous waterfall staircase — a rock corridor where, in monsoon, water flows directly down the trail you are climbing. The climb takes roughly two to three hours. An alternative route passes the 2nd-century Bhaja Caves, combining Buddhist heritage with the trek.
Visapur’s plateau is far more expansive than Lohagad’s — it takes genuine time to walk. Scattered across it are the ruins of a Peshwa-era palace (now roofless but still imposing), a massive Hanuman carving, several temples, old houses, decorated arches, water cisterns, and cannons. Two roofless buildings were once British-era government offices. The views take in Lohagad right next door, plus Tung, Tikona, Korigad and Pawna Dam. It is a place that rewards a slow, exploratory pace rather than a summit-and-descend mentality.
Lohagad is more popular, more accessible and has better-preserved fortifications. Visapur is bigger, wilder, less crowded, and in monsoon has the waterfall trail that Lohagad lacks. The combination trek — up Visapur via the waterfall staircase, across the connecting ridge to Lohagad, and down Lohagad’s stairs — is the best single-day fort trek near Lonavala and takes six to seven hours from Bhaje village. If you have time for only one, come in monsoon for Visapur’s waterfall. If you have the full day, do both.
