Everyone drives through the Konkan on the way to Goa and almost nobody stops. That's the whole opportunity. Maharashtra's coast is wilder and quieter than its famous neighbour — red-earth cliffs, sea forts on rocky headlands, clean beaches with hardly anyone on them, and some of the best seafood in the country. It's Goa's soul without Goa's crowds.
Ganpatipule is the Konkan at its calm best — a swayambhu Ganesh temple right by a clean, curving beach, backed by the greenery of the coast. Nearby Ratnagiri gives you Alphonso-mango country, historic corners and quiet coves. This is the gentler, more devotional end of the coast.
Further south, Tarkarli is the showpiece — water clear enough for scuba and snorkelling, backwaters, and long, uncrowded sand. Malvan hands you the sea fort of Sindhudurg, built out on the rocks by the Marathas, and the food culture that gives Malvani cuisine its name. The whole coast is studded with sea forts — Sindhudurg, Vijaydurg and more — legacies of Maratha sea power, dramatic on their headlands. October to March is the comfortable window — pleasant, dry, the sea at its calmest and clearest (best for water activities). The monsoon is spectacularly green and atmospheric but rough at sea and slick on the ghat roads. Summer is hot and humid but hands you the mangoes. Plan the season around whether you're coming for the water or the greenery.
