Ladakh punishes two kinds of packing: too much, and the wrong little things. You can carry a mountain of clothing and still be the person shivering at a pass because you skipped a windproof layer, or blistering because you forgot sunscreen at 5,000 metres. The trick isn't volume — it's packing for a place that is freezing and blazing on the same afternoon.
Here's what actually earns its space on the bike.
Ladakh's weather changes with altitude, not just time of day. The system that works is layers: thermals as a base, a warm mid-layer (fleece or light down), and a genuinely windproof, water-resistant outer shell. A pass can be below freezing while the valley you left an hour ago was warm. Add a buff or balaclava for the wind, a warm cap, and gloves you can actually ride in — the thing first-timers most often underestimate is how cold your hands get at speed.
A proper riding jacket and trousers with armour, sturdy boots that cover the ankle, riding gloves, and a good helmet. Knee and elbow guards if your jacket doesn't have them. Rain gear that packs small, because you will meet water crossings and weather. This is the non-negotiable list — the mountains are unforgiving of gaps here.
Talk to a doctor before you leave and carry what they recommend — Diamox is commonly discussed for acclimatisation, but that's a conversation for you and a physician, not a checklist. Beyond that: high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm (the sun at altitude is brutal), sunglasses that cut glare, any personal medication in your carry-on, basic first aid, and a reusable water bottle you keep filling. Hydration does more for altitude than almost anything you can buy.
Carry physical copies of your ID and permits as well as digital ones — network drops out for long stretches. A power bank, a headlamp, a few zip-lock bags to keep electronics dry, and a small dry bag for the bike. Cash, because cards and UPI are unreliable once you leave Leh.
Fresh clothes for every day — you won't need them and they cost you space. Heavy toiletries. "Just in case" shoes. Pack for washing a few things on the road, not for a fashion shoot; every rider comes back having worn a third of what they brought.
