Every Pune and Mumbai rider eventually asks the same question: do I ride all the way to Ladakh, or fly up and ride there? It's the right question, and the honest answer depends on how much of your trip you want to spend getting to the mountains versus being in them. Both are real journeys. They're just very different ones.
From Pune or Mumbai the road north runs up through Gujarat and Rajasthan to Delhi, then into the mountains by one of two legendary approaches. The Manali–Leh highway is the classic — dramatic, high, hard, the ride people dream about. The Srinagar–Leh route climbs more gradually, which is gentler on acclimatisation. Many riders go up one and come down the other. Either way, the stretch from the plains to Delhi is long, hot highway riding that is more endurance than adventure.
A lot of Pune and Mumbai riders transport their motorcycle by train to Delhi (or Chandigarh) and start the real ride from there — it skips the least interesting, most tiring days and protects your energy for the mountains. It comes with its own hassle: parcel booking, packing the bike, and no guarantee it travels on your train, so build in a buffer. Done right, it's the smart compromise between "rode every inch" and "flew and missed the approach."
Riding Pune/Mumbai to Leh and back is thousands of kilometres and a serious chunk of time, much of it on highway before the scenery earns its reputation. It's a genuine achievement and some riders wouldn't do it any other way. But it demands a well-prepped bike — fresh chain, clutch, tyres, spares — real riding stamina, and a schedule that doesn't rush the altitude. Go in knowing that, not surprised by it.
If your time is limited, or it's your first Ladakh, flying into Leh and riding a Himalayan there is the honest recommendation — you spend your days on the passes and lakes, not the approach, and your acclimatisation is cleaner. There's no wrong answer; there's only the trip that fits your calendar and your riding.
