For a lot of Indian travellers, Gulmarg or Manali is the first time they've stood in real snow — and the excitement can hide how quickly cold and wet turn uncomfortable, or how slippery frozen ground gets. A little know-how turns a novelty into a genuinely great day out.
The enemy isn't just cold — it's wet cold. Wear waterproof outer layers, avoid cotton next to your skin (it soaks and chills), and layer up so you can adjust. Waterproof gloves, a warm cap and a neck gaiter make more difference than a single heavy jacket. Once your clothes are wet through, the day is effectively over, so dress to keep the snow out.
Fashion boots will betray you. Waterproof boots with a grippy sole are the single most important thing you can wear; packed snow and ice are genuinely slippery, and most first-timer mishaps are simple slips. Walk with short, flat steps, and take extra care on slopes and steps.
Snow reflects sunlight fiercely, and people come back sunburnt and squinting from a "cold" day. Sunglasses and sunscreen aren't optional on bright snow — the glare can genuinely hurt your eyes and skin at altitude.
Places like Gulmarg are high, so the altitude adds its own considerations — our separate first-timer's altitude guide covers that. On any activity like skiing, sledging or the gondola, follow the operators and instructors, don't wander onto unmarked slopes, and respect closures. The mountains are wonderful and unforgiving in equal measure.
Meet the snow prepared and it's pure joy. On GoRaahi winter trips we make sure you arrive dressed and briefed for it — so your first snow is a memory, not a shivering lesson.
