Some places are over-photographed and still manage to stop you when you finally see them. Kashmir is one. The valley earns every comparison to paradise it's ever been given — the light on Dal Lake, the meadows above the treeline, the snow — and it deserves to be travelled with a little care and a lot of presence. Here's the valley as it actually is, stop by stop.
Srinagar is the valley's heart, and its rhythm is set by water. A shikara gliding across Dal Lake at first light, the floating gardens and vegetable markets, a night on a carved wooden houseboat, the Mughal gardens terraced up the hillside — this is the postcard, and it holds up. Give the old city and its craft traditions time too; the shawls, papier-mâché and walnut wood are the real thing here.
Gulmarg is a high meadow that becomes something else entirely in winter, when it turns into one of India's premier snow destinations. The gondola climbs toward Apharwat for views that don't feel like they belong to this country. In summer it's green and gentle; in winter it's white and thrilling. Either way it's the valley's high point in more than one sense.
Pahalgam, where the Lidder runs bright and cold through pine and meadow, is the valley at its most pastoral — the place to walk, ride and simply sit by the water. Sonmarg, the "meadow of gold," is the gateway toward the high mountains and glaciers. Both are day-and-night different from Srinagar's water-world, and both belong on a full valley trip.
Kashmir is a place for all seasons: tulips and blossom in spring, green and cool in summer, gold in autumn, deep snow in winter for Gulmarg. There's no wrong time, only different valleys. As with any trip to a sensitive region, it's worth checking current local advisories close to your dates and travelling with people who know the ground — not as alarm, just as ordinary good practice.
